How To Avoid Being Forgotten In The Digital Age

Don't Let Your Legacy Disappear

My greatest fear is to be forgotten.

My achievements, my values, my name

Poof

Gone like smoke.

But is that even possible?

Let me tell you a story…

“Damnatio Memoriae” is a modern Latin word which translates to “Condemnation of memory”

In ancient Rome, the practice of damnatio memoriae was the condemnation of emperors after their deaths. If the Senate or a later emperor did not like the acts of an emperor, they could have his property seized, his name erased and his statues reworked (normally defaced).

Wikipedia

Traces of this act have also been found in other ancient cultures like:

  • Ancient Egypt

  • Ancient Greece

  • Ancient Hittites

Infact, the earliest found evidence of this is in ancient Mesopotamia where the King of Umah was called “the man from Umah”– showing an intention degradation of his worth.

You must be wondering why I'm suddenly giving you a history lesson

Well…

We're no longer in ancient Rome, but you can still be just as forgotten.

This type of “Damnatio Memoriae” is even more scary because it is not intentional.

It is the “Condemnation of Memory” that comes out of social media irrelevance.

In other words:

You will fade away from relevancy with time if you don't build a personal brand.

Let's face it…

The human society has evolved to be virtual

And social media is our town square.

Think of the quarantine;

Every business had to go online or go out of business.

This is the power of the internet.

And now it's not just about businesses, even people.

OUR EVOLUTION

  • Society is virtual

  • Social media is the town square

  • Your account is your address

Anyone who isn't on social media will soon become irrelevant.

No matter what you have accomplished, time can make you irrelevant.

Humans forget irrelevant things.

You need to consistently prove your worth.

We are at a war of attention

And trust me

Doctors, war heroes, and philanthropists are losing this war to cute cats on the internet.

Simply because they don't have a strong online presence.

You may not like always showing up online– but it is the game.

The game doesn't care about your feelings.

You either build a personal brand or let everything you stand for die out with time.

Luckily,

It isn't hard to build one.

You just need a guide

Thank you for reading, this week

Till the next one

Your friend,

Michael.
