Awareness: The Cheat-code For Life
WARNING: This letter will make you question a lot of things in your life. If you like the sound of that, keep reading you weirdođ
Awareness is how we interact with life.
You can only think, talk about, touch or speak to things you know exist.
We walk through life only affecting things in our tiny bubble of existence
But that doesn't stop us from being affected by things we don't know.
Think about it
There are so many things we're ignorant about
But we keep moving anyway.
We have made peace with the fact that we are not aware of the existence of everything:
We have accepted that there are people we will meet we didn't know existed
We have accepted that there are places we will go we didn't know existed
We have accepted that there are things we will do we didn't know existed
And that's alright.
It is part of the human experience.
But to truly understand how to live our lives meaningfully, we must understand how awareness works
And use it to our advantage.
HUMAN BEINGS ARE AUTOMATONS
You are automated to an extent.
In the book âInfluence: The Psychology of Persuasionâ by Robert Cialdini
He described an experiment in which certain animals exhibit certain behaviours when triggered by specific features or circumstances.
For instance:
A mother turkey will lovingly care for a stuffed polecat doll with a recorder playing a âcheep-cheepâ sound( the sound of a baby turkey)
Even though the polecat is the natural predator of the turkey
And a male Robin will violently attack an ordinary clump of red breast feathers but will leave a perfect replica of another male robin without the red breast feather alone.
In the first instance, the turkey's maternal instincts were triggered by an ordinary âcheep-cheep" sound
And in the second instance, the Robin's territorial aggression was triggered by just the colour of the breast feathers.
Humans too have learned to automate their responses to survive in this ever-changing and complex world.
This is why sales techniques like Black Friday where everything is 50% off works on us,
And someone can get you to do something just by giving you a valid reason why.
NB: I'm trying to make this letter as concise as possible, so I suggest you read the book. It has experiments that prove this.
The scary part is, we are not even aware of these automations in our minds.
We are so focused on all the problems and desires and goals we have, that we automate our responses to things outside that bubble.
So even though we are not aware of these things, they still affect us in our tiny bubble of existence.
So how do we gain more awareness in our lives?
QUESTION EVERYTHING
Why am I doing what I am doing?
Why do I respond to people a certain way?
Why did I buy that new course even though I don't need it?
Why am I still reading this newsletter?
People are living life on complete autopilot:
Working jobs they hate
Tolerating toxic relationships
Getting stuck in several addictions
Just because they don't ask themselves the tough questions.
Question EVERYTHING.
That's how you get answers and answers hold the key to the door of operations in your subconscious.
DON'T JUDGE YOUR THOUGHTS
Don't try to condemn or justify your thoughts, negative or positive.
Just like you don't try to condemn or justify the colour of a frog or bird
But you see and acknowledge their existence; so should you see and acknowledge the existence of your thoughts.
Your thoughts are a product of your mind.
Your mind is a combination of both your conscious and subconscious.
If you truly want to be more aware of yourself, you must realize that every thought that comes from your mind is worthy of examination.
Not judgment.
ACCEPT THAT IT WILL TAKE TIME
It will take time and practice to increase your awareness
It will take even more time to change the things you realize that you don't like about yourself.
It is easier to learn a habit than to unlearn it
Thatâs just how it is.
Change is gradual, so have fun with it.
MY FINAL THOUGHTS
When you have a motive, awareness becomes a matter of choice.
Therefore what is your motive?
A good life? Clarity? Self-love?
Once you discover what you want, it becomes easier to objectify your reality and find out why you live the way you do.
Choosing to be more aware of yourself and your environmental influences is a great POWER and a wonderful gift.
Awareness is hard to develop because it requires (focused) attention.
And a way I have found to focus is to gain clarity through writing.
If you need help with learning how to efficiently write, I recommend LIMITLESS WRITING
My mini-course and template on generating unlimited writing ideas and expressing your thoughts efficiently.
Thank you for reading this far.
I wish you luck on your journey to gain more awareness.
See you next week.
Your friend,
Michael
